The right flex (stiffness) of your floorball stick

Logo unihockeyshop.ch

With different floorball sticks you find a various amount of flex indications. With flex we mean the flexibility of your shaft, often also referred to as elasticity or stiffness. Floorball sticks consist of premium material, such as carbon or composite (a fibre-composite). These materials have a particular high strength, that means they only break due to immense forces. Besides this high strength, sticks have yet to be elastic and therefore flexible to meet the challenges of the game. Especially when shooting or passing, the elasticity provides for the perfect transfer of power from your upper body to the blade. The elasticity is equal to the flexibility that you find as millimeter indication with your stick.

How does a stick gain his flexibility?
Every stick model is tested mechanically in a laboratory before its market launch to determine the flexibility. Based on the results, the stick receives its certification issued by the International Floorball Federation (IFF). During the tests, the stick is centrally loaded with a force of 300N (30kg), whereby, it tends to bend. Particular stiff shafts allow a maximum curvature of 23 to 24mm only. Medium-hard sticks reach a bending of 26 to 29mm and soft ones more than 30mm.

Elasticity (Flex) Type of Player
23 - 25mm Adults
Powerful players with good technique
26 - 29mm Adults
(advanced and professionals)
29 - 32 mm Ladies
Junios
Adults (beginners)
32 - 36mm Kids

How do different flexibilities affect the floorball game?
The stiffer the stick (e.g. 23mm), the harder the shots can be (if the player has the affordable power). During the shot, your upper body transfers its forces to the blade while touching the ground. A stiff bat bends more easily and transfers the forces faster to the ball. A soft shaft whereas bends stronger, taking longer to come back to its initial position. Hereby, less power is transferred to the ball. Yet, soft sticks have their advantages, they provide for a better handling and a facilitated taking of the ball by reducing the ball speed.

What flex do I need?
Hard sticks enable hard shots, however require a brilliant technique. If you play floorball for a long time already and have an accurate technique with great power, a stiff model (23 to 25mm) is ideal for you. With this you can make best use of your power abilities and technical skills.
If you have a good technique, choose a semi-hard shaft (26 to 29mm). It excuses minor mistakes, conveys a fine handling, yet still allows hard shots.
As a beginner, choose a soft stick, e.g. with a stiffness of 29-32mm. Sticks of this degree enable you to control the ball, facilitate trapping the ball and a precise shot release. Juniors, ladies and children tend to choose softer bats (up to 36mm), these meet the lower strength abilities of those players and enable in particular younger players an easier learning.

Recommendations out of our experience
Just as what is valid for the stick length, can be applied to the flexibility - choose the stick that gives you the best feeling. Even players with a perfect technique partly choose a softer flex of about 29mm, if the ball feeling is particular important to them. Strikers often tend to prefer stiffer devices to be able to shoot fast and hard. Defenders, whereas, take softer and semi-hard sticks to have a better ball control during duels.
